Sometimes you just need to carry the essentials and loading up a handheld bottle ends up feeling like a brick. When you need to find a sweet spot between a minimalist short run or a hydration pack filled long run, SPIbelt really comes to the rescue. I received SPIbelt Performance Series just in time to test it out ahead of the NYC Marathon.

Due to increased security demands the NYC Marathon has strict rules against hydration packs*. Essentially, you’re limited to hydration belt, handheld, or riding empty and relying on the aid stations. I really dislike hydration bouncing around my waist so I opted for an Orange Mud Handheld. However, this left me with limited carry capacity for phone, ID, cash, metro card, fuel, etc. In steps SPIbelt to act as the unassuming mule.

For the marathon the SPIbelt held: iPhone SE, license, $20, metro card, apartment key, chapstick, several gels, and a bar. I actually fit it all in the pouch even though the belt does have loops for gels; I found it really difficult to get the gels into the loops and was unable to use them during the race. Maybe I just need practice or I’m missing a trick to make it easier, but that’s my one complaint about SPIbelt. Loaded with all those essentials, the belt was unnoticeable and didn’t bounce at all. I often have issues with things around my waist since I have wide hips, but SPIbelt stayed in place, never shifted, and never rode up.

SPIbelt is weather resistance (NOT waterproof) so it’s advisable to put everything in a ziplock for added protection. However, I often leave my phone unprotected so it’s easier to use mid-run or take pictures. There has been no moisture in the pouch or on my phone after any run, even with tons of sweat. I have not used in the rain and would be sure to keep everything protected if I did.

According to the SPIBelt site, the Performance Series is:

  • Bounce-free
  • 4 loops for energy gels
  • Weather-resistant pocket and zipper
  • Comfortable, soft elastic prevents chafing
  • Sturdy buckle and glides for even the most active users
  • Pocket expands to 8″ x 4″ x 2″
  • Fits waist size 29″ through 52″

It has an increased pocket size compared to the standard SPIbelt and can fit:  iPhone® 6S Plus, Samsung Galaxy Note® 5, MOTOROLA® DROID Turbo, Nokia® Lumia 1320, Nokia® Lumia 1520, and Samsung Galaxy S®6.

SPIbelt is a great daily accessory to throw into your gym bag.  Never get stuck on a run with your phone and keys in a sweaty hand again! Check out what other BibRave Pros have to say:

*Side note: I’m an Orange Mud Hydraquiver user. Ahead of NYC Marathon several OM users asked if the hydraquiver was allowed in NYC and we were told no. However, when I showed up at the start line I saw several people with OM packs. Frustrating, but at least I know for the future.
